Capital Avionics, Inc., developed the CA-320 Digital Compass System in cooperation with the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and Florida State University’s Physics Department. This system is used to calibrate magnetic compass systems in aircraft. Prior to the development of this test equipment, the industry had to rely upon either ground based compass roses or hand held wet-compass type devices to determine magnetic heading. Both of these methods, however, require that the technician accurately interpret and correct for aircraft orientation and parallax errors. This can create a situation whereby two technicians interpret two different readings from the same direction.
The CA-320 is a stand alone, calibrated magnetic reference standard. It measures the earth’s magnetic field in three axis and with its internal pitch/roll sensor, is able to accurately determine heading even when tilted. The system is comprised of the following:
